Aviva Rd 1 London Welsh vs Leicester

London Welsh vs Leicester 1/7

Sunday game
This from planet rugby
Vereniki Goneva and Rob Andrew will make their league debuts for Tigers in the opening game of the new season at London Welsh on Sunday.
Fijian wing Goneva makes his first Premiership appearance after a move from Tarbes in France, while South African second-row Andrew also runs out for the first time in the competition.
Geordan Murphy, beginning his sixteenth season as a Leicester Tiger, leads the team as captain.
Brett Deacon, who returned to his hometown club after two seasons with Gloucester, is named among the replacements. Jordan Crane, who missed the entire 2010/11 season with a knee injury, makes his return to the squad.
"London Welsh fought hard to get into the Aviva Premiership and it will be a big occasion for them in their first Premiership game. There is a lot of experience in their squad and their coaching team," said Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill.
"We've got to be accurate in what we do. We've got some good competition for places in the squad, we've given them all valuable game-time in the pre-season, but this is where it really matters."
Meanwhile, London Welsh head coach Lyn Jones has named an experienced side for the Exiles' Aviva Premiership debut against Leicester at the Kassam Stadium.
The Welsh side contains five of the starting line up that clinched the Championship at the Kassam on May 30 - captain Jonathan Mills, Gordon Ross, Joe Ajuwa, Lee Beach and Hudson Tonga'uiha.
Mills, who made his debut for Welsh on loan from the Scarlets in January 2007, will be making his 144th appearance for the club.
Ross won the last of his 25 caps for Scotland in 2006 and is beginning his fourth season at Old Deer Park, while Ajuwa contributed ten tries to the Exiles' Championship winning campaign.
Tonga'uiha is the brother of Northampton prop Soane and was the club's leading try scorer last season in the Championship, with 12. Beach captained Wales to Sevens World Cup glory in 2009 in Dubai and was man of the match in the second leg of the Championship final against the Pirates.
Of the club's summer additions, internationals Phil MacKenzie (Canada), Sonny Parker (Wales), Franck Montanella (France), Paulica Ion (Romania) and Kirill Kulemin (Russia) all start on Sunday.
Form: London Welsh are participating in England's top division for the first time and become the 20th different side to play Premiership rugby. The Exiles concluded last season's RFU Championship campaign with four wins in their last five games. Oxford's Kassam Stadium becomes the 31st new venue to host a Premiership encounter. Leicester Tigers have lost their opening fixture in Aviva Premiership Rugby for the past three seasons. The Tigers won their last eight games of the regular season in the Premiership last year. This is Leicester's first visit to Kassam Stadium, whilst the club have not played in the city of Oxford since a visit to Iffley Road to take on the Dark Blues in 1994. The two clubs have met just once before in competitive rugby, a 43-3 win for the Tigers at Old Deer Park in the 3rd round of the Pilkington Cup in January 1990, whilst the last time they met in a friendly was in December 1995 at Welford Road (Leicester winning 62-19).

The teams:

London Welsh: 15 Tom Arscott, 14 Phil MacKenzie, 13 Sonny Parker, 12. Hudson Tonga'uiha, 11 Joe Ajuwa, 10 Gordon Ross, 9 Jonah Holmes, 8 Daniel Browne, 7 Lee Beach, 6 Ed Williamson, 5 Kirill Kulemin, 4 Jonathan Mills (capt), 3 Paulica Ion, 2 Neil Briggs, 1 Franck Montanella.

Poor London welsh.
A complete ass kicking on their very first game.
Personally I didn't think they were that impressive in the semi pro div 2.
They will be slaughtered by Leicester.
Lets go for 28 pts

Final result 38-13 to Tigers.
Could/should have been alot more but a win by 25 is close enough to my 28 for government work..
Heck, when Toby Flood can sidestep a few players then the opposition must be crap. In fact the only guy that shone was #11 for Welsh

Aviva Rd 1 Saracens vs London Irish

Saracens vs London Irish

From Planet rugby

Chris Ashton will make his Premiership debut for Saracens against London Irish as part of the London Double Header at Twickenham on Saturday.
Kelly Brown also makes a return from the leg injury that saw him miss the second half of last season. Centre Joel Tomkins forms a partnership with Brad Barritt with Alex Goode at full-back.
Mako Vunipola is given the nod at loose head prop with Petrus du Plessis on the other side of the scrum. Rhys Gill and Carlos Nieto are among the replacements. Owen Farrell and Alistair Hargreaves both picked up knocks in training this week and miss the match.
"It promises to be an exciting season in the Aviva Premiership and looking around the league, all clubs have strengthened going into the new campaign with quality players joining from all across the globe - proving that this competition is one of the best in the world," said Director of Rugby Mark McCall.
"The players have worked hard over the summer months in an excellent pre-season that has allowed us to spend time together on and off the field, creating an even stronger bond among the group. The objective of the club is to be consistently successful and we are aware that in order for that to be achieved, there will be no substitute for hard work over the coming months - starting at Twickenham on Saturday.
"London Irish have made a number of changes on and off the field. In Brian Smith they have an experienced Director of Rugby and with the likes of Tomas O'Leary and Shane Geraghty joining their squad, they have also added quality on the pitch which should make for an exciting game."
Meanwhile, New Zealand lock Bryn Evans will captain London Irish. Evans will form a second row partnership with George Skivington, who joined from Leicester Tigers over the summer.
Scotland international, Scott Lawson, will start at hooker alongside Max Lahiff and Leo Halavatau with Jon Fisher, Jamie Gibson and Ofisa Treviranus making up the back row.
Ireland international, Tomás O'Leary, will partner Steven Shingler at half back with Sailosi Tagicakibau moving from the wing to inside centre in place of injured Joe Ansbro.
Jonathan Joseph will partner the Samoan in the centre with Marland Yarde, Topsy Ojo and last season's Aviva Premiership top point scorer, Tom Homer, making up the back three.
"We've got a fantastic squad on board for the 2012/13 season and we are looking forward to the season ahead," said London Irish Director of Rugby Brian Smith.
"This squad is very ambitious and we aim to emulate the deeds of our courageous sevens team that won the JP Morgan sevens title over the summer."
Form: Saracens have a won 3, lost 5 record in previous London Double Headers, and have won just one of the last four such encounters. Sarries were victorious in their last three regular season fixtures in Aviva Premiership Rugby last season. London Irish's record in previous London Double Header clashes is won 5, lost 3. The Exiles won their last two games of last season at Worcester and at home to Gloucester. Irish have won only one of their last six visits to Twickenham: 33-16 over Saracens in this equivalent fixture in 2010. Saracens have won their last three encounters with London Irish.

The teams:
Saracens:15 Alex Goode, 14 Chris Ashton, 13 Joel Tomkins, 12 Brad Barritt, 11 Chris Wyles, 10 Charlie Hodgson, 9 Richard Wigglesworth, 8 Ernst Joubert, 7 Will Fraser, 6 Kelly Brown, 5 Mouritz Botha, 4 Steve Borthwick (c), 3 Petrus du Plessis, 2 Schalk Brits, 1 Mako Vunipola.
Replacements: 16 Jamie George, 17 Rhys Gill, 18 Carlos Nieto, 19 Eoin Sheriff, 20 Jackson Wray, 21 Neil de Kock, 22 Nils Mordt, 23 James Short.
London Irish:15 Tom Homer, 14 Topsy Ojo, 13 Jonathan Joseph, 12 Sailosi Tagicakibau, 11 Marland Yarde 10 Steve Shingler, 9 Tomás O'Leary, 8 Jon Fisher 7 Ofisa Treviranus, 6 Jamie Gibson, 5 Bryn Evans (c), 4 George Skivington, 3 Leo Halavatau, 2 Scott Lawson, 1 Max Lahiff.

Date: Saturday, September 1
Venue: Twickenham
Kick-off: 16.30 BST (15.30 GMT)
Referee: Wayne Barnes

Interesting game.
Irish have changed out of all proportion. So many have moved on and some good ones brought in.
How many times have i looked at irish backs and said  they would score many tries only to be depressed at their lack of adventure.
I'll take the boring path and go with Sarries by 3, which allows an upset of Irish winning by 2 to allow me to at least collect a half point in Superbru.

Game over.
Irish flattered to deceive in early stages. Sarries ended up walking all over them 40-3

Aviva Rd 1 Worcester vs Bath

Worcester 7/4 vs Bath 4/7

This from Planet Rugby

Paul James, Dominic Day and Kyle Eastmond will all make their first competitive starts for Bath as the team take on Worcester Warriors in the opening round of the 2012/13 Aviva Premiership season.
James and Day both joined the club over the summer, and, having impressed during pre-season, will start at loosehead prop and in the second row respectively.
James is joined in the front row by Lee Mears and David Wilson, with Day joining forces with captain Stuart Hooper in the engine room. Francois Louw, recently selected to join the Springboks squad for the Rugby Championship, Carl Fearns and Ben Skirving complete the pack.
Olly Barkley pulls on the fly-half shirt in a competitive fixture for the first time since November 2010, renewing his half-back partnership with Michael Claassens.
Eastmond arrived at the Club last year, but injuries limited his time in the Bath jersey to just three appearances from the bench. He will start on the left wing, with Tom Biggs on the opposite side. Matt Banahan and Dan Hipkiss combine in the centres, with Nick Abendanon named at full-back.
"We've had a good pre-season, and are pleased with the results, but we all know the real hard work is just beginning and that areas of our game still need improving," said coach Gary Gold.
"Worcester are a difficult side to prepare for. They have a good strong pack, a staunch defence and they are a team that work very hard for one another, which is always difficult to counter."
Meanwhile, Worcester coach Richard Hill has handed club debuts to five summer signings.
Dean Schofield will captain Worcester for the first time and is paired with James Percival in the second row.
Giant Tongan number eight Semisi Taulava will make his Aviva Premiership debut in a back-row that also contains Chris Jones and Sam Betty.
Prop John Andress is the third new face in the pack and lines up with England international Matt Mullan and hooker Aleki Lutui.
Samoa international captain David Lemi will make his debut and provide the firepower out wide with Josh Drauniniu while a new centre pairing sees Josh Matavesi handed his first start alongside Alex Grove.
Chris Pennell will operate at full back while Andy Goode and Shaun Perry will form the half back pairing for the opening afternoon of league action.
Form: Worcester Warriors' only previous win on the opening weekend in the Premiership was when they beat Sale 17-12 at Sixways last season. The Warriors finished off the 2011/12 Aviva Premiership Rugby campaign with four straight defeats. Bath have played away from home in round one every year since 1998, except for 2007, despite this they have won their opening game in four of the past five years. Bath won just one of their last six games in all competitions last season: 17-12 at home to London Wasps on 21 April. Worcester have beaten Bath just once in their last ten meetings in all competitions since 2007: 16-7 at Sixways in Aviva Premiership Rugby on 25 November 2011.

The teams:
Worcester Warriors: 15 Chris Pennell, 14 Josh Drauniniu, 13 Alex Grove, 12 Josh Matavesi, 11 David Lemi, 10 Andy Goode, 9 Shaun Perry, 8 Semisi Taulava, 7 Sam Betty, 6 Chris Jones, 5 Dean Schofield (c), 4 James Percival, 3 John Andress, 2 Aleki Lutui, 1 Matt Mullan.
Replacements: 16 Ollie Hayes, 17 Ceri Jones, 18 James Currie, 19 Craig Gillies, 20 Matt Kvesic, 21 Jonny Arr, 22 Joe Carlisle, 23 Ben Howard.
Bath: 15 Nick Abendanon, 14 Tom Biggs, 13 Dan Hipkiss, 12 Matt Banahan, 11 Kyle Eastmond, 10 Olly Barkley, 9 Michael Claassens, 8 Ben Skirving, 7 Francois Louw, 6 Carl Fearns, 5 Dominic Day, 4 Stuart Hooper (c), 3 David Wilson, 2 Lee Mears, 1 Paul James.
Replacements: 16 Ross Batty, 17 Nathan Catt, 18 Kane Palma-Newport, 19 Dave Attwood, 20 Will Skuse, 21 Mark McMillan, 22 Ollie Devoto, 23 Jack Cuthbert
Date: Saturday, September 1
Venue: Sixways
Kick-off: 15.00 BST (14.00 GMT)
Referee: Luke Pearce

Well Worcester have signed some interesting players. I didn't think much of them last year. Who knows how these will play together. It seems the cheapest route for buying players is to hit pacific Nations. I played league with many Tongans back in the day with Fulham and whilst they were pleased with the opportunity, they were basically very selfish players at heart and when they decided to pass, it was at the wrong time and with not alot of skill.
I'm backing class over bulk. Bath to win by 15, if their new management decide they want to play expansive rugby.

Game over.
Bath suck as usual. Same old same old rubbish.
They were behind for all the game and just came back to win 24-23

Aviva Rd 1 Exeter vs Sale

Exeter 4/6 vs Sale 6/4

This from Planet Rugby.

Corne Uys and Richie Gray will make their debuts for Sale Sharks against Exeter Chiefs at Sandy Park on Saturday.
Danny Cipriani is set to make it three debuts for Sale if he comes off the bench.
Looking ahead to the game, Sale director of rugby Bryan Redpath said he expected a difficult road trip against last season's fifth-placed side.
"Nobody's hiding from the fact how tough the Chiefs are down there," said Redpath.
"Last year's performance at Sandy Park wasn't good enough and Sale Sharks suffered. The key thing is that we travel South West with a clear mindset of what we need to do. We have to turn up with our A1 game to compete down there. Exeter will be red hot favourites to win because they don't often lose at home, so we've nothing to lose and will give it our best shot.
"There were differences between our pre-season games against Glasgow and Leinster in terms of intensity and the playing conditions. The squad we've selected get the first crack at it and we'll see where we are after this game."
Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter has selected a strong line-up for the visit of the Sharks, who like the Chiefs finished last season strongly to book themselves a place in the Heineken Cup.
Indeed, of the eight new summer signings at Sandy Park, only Irish international Ian Whitten and scrum-half Will Chudley are given the nod from the outset.
Otherwise, it's a familiar looking line-up for Exeter with Tom Hayes again skippering the side from the second row. Whitten partners the experienced Jason Shoemark in the home midfield, whilst Chudley is given a chance to impress as injury deprives the home side of Haydn Thomas in the number nine jersey.
Form: Exeter Chiefs will be all out to preserve their opening day form, having won both previous round one clashes they have contested in Aviva Premiership Rugby. The Chiefs lost three of their last four games in all competitions last season. Sale Sharks' opening day reversal at Worcester last season ended a three game winning run in previous round one encounters. The Sharks ended a five game losing run on the road in the Premiership with their 24-19 victory at Gloucester on 21 April. Exeter have won all four previous encounters between the two clubs.

The teams:
Exeter Chiefs:15 Phil Dollman, 14 Josh Tatupu, 13 Ian Whitten, 12 Jason Shoemark, 11 Matt Jess, 10 Ignacio Mieres, 9 Will Chudley, 8 Richard Baxter, 7 James Scaysbrook, 6 Tom Johnson, 5 Aly Muldowney, 4 Tom Hayes (capt), 3 Craig Mitchell, 2 Chris Whitehead, 1 Brett Sturgess.
Replacements: 16 Simon Alcott, 17 Ben Moon, 18 Chris Budgen, 19 James Hanks, 20 James Phillips, 21 Kevin Barrett, 22 Gareth Steenson, 23 Luke Arscott.
Sale Sharks: 15 Rob Miller, 14 Will Addison, 13 Johnny Leota, 12 Sam Tuitupou, 11 Corne Uys, 10 Nick Macleod, 9 Dwayne Peel, 8 Andy Powell, 7 David Seymour (c), 6 James Gaskell, 5 Fraser McKenzie, 4 Richie Gray, 3 Vadim Cobilas, 2 Joe Ward, 1 Eifion Lewis-Roberts.
Replacements: 16 Marc Jones, 17 Ross Harrison, 18 Tony Buckley, 19 Kearnan Myall, 20 Richie Vernon, 21 Cillian Willis, 22 Danny Cipriani, 23 Jordan Davies.
Date: Saturday, September 1
Venue: Sandy Park
Kick-off: 15.00 BST (14.00GMT)
Referee: Andrew Small

I lost so many tips on Exeter last year. They lacked a stable of superstars yet won as a team. Brilliant coaching and club  Rob Baxter for Knighthood.
Sale was the same but for different reasons. I thought they possessed a great looking back line and should have won more. Crap coaching.
Exeter look like playing their strongest team I have ever seen. Tatupu, Shoemark, Jess and Mieres....wow.
Exeter by 10

Game over.
Well I said this looked like the strongest I have seen Exeter and I was right.
Tries all over the field. They won 43-6.
Thats more points/tries than they scored all of last season isn't it?

Aviva rd 1 Gloucester vs Northampton

Gloucester 4/6 vs Northampton

From Planet rugby
Gloucester will be without skipper Jim Hamilton for their season opener against Northampton Saints at Kingsholm on Saturday.
Hamilton rolled an ankle in training this week so fellow lock Alex Brown captains the side.
He leads a team that sees first Premiership starts for Gloucester the likes of Billy Twelvetrees, Dan Robson and Ben Morgan. Summer signings Huia Edmonds, Sione Kalamafoni and Martyn Thomas are named amongst the replacements.
Director of Rugby Nigel Davies knows that Northampton will be a tough first opponent but that he's happy with how his side are progressing.
"We're as ready as we can be. We've had a good three months at it after lots of change over the summer - systems, structure, personnel," he said.
"The preseason games were very important as we targeted certain things to achieve in them. We've learned a lot of lessons from them and gradually got better.
"They're a very good side. I went to watch them in Edinburgh last week and they played very well. We're a side who have been together for three months, they're a side that's been together for three years.
"They've had a lot of stability and have evolved their game. They'll provide the sternest of challenges but that's good. We know they're coming and we've prepared for that."
Meanwhile Northampton Director of rugby Jim Mallinder says he is looking for the Saints teamstep up their all-round game.
The Saints open their Aviva Premiership Rugby campaign on the road for the first time since 2003, but while the summer has included wins over Leinster and Edinburgh the Saints boss says every player in Saturday's squad will have to improve if they are to come home from Kingsholm with the points.
"Training this summer has been good and we've had some promising pre-season performances, but none of that will count if we don't get a positive result tomorrow," he commented.
"Gloucester is always a tough place to visit, and they have played well over the past few weeks.
"We know that we need to play a lot better, increase our intensity and accuracy and defend well right from the first whistle. It's going to be interesting to see how both teams go in the game - Gloucester have new coaches and new ideas, while we've brought in a few players and made a couple of changes.
"But we're feeling positive ahead of the trip and we're looking forward to meeting the challenge."
Form: Gloucester have lost in round one of Aviva Premiership Rugby in three of the past four seasons, including the game at Northampton last year. Gloucester finished off last season with an unwanted run of six straight defeats. Northampton Saints begin the season away from home for the first time since 2005, and have won their last five opening weekend fixtures. The Saints won four of their last five regular season games in Aviva Premiership Rugby last campaign. Gloucester have won three of their last four clashes with Northampton, whilst the Saints have been victorious at Kingsholm just once since 2005: 27-14 on 19 September 2009.

The teams:
Gloucester:15 Jonny May, 14 Charlie Sharples, 13 Mike Tindall, 12 Billy Twelvetrees, 11 James Simpson-Daniel, 10 Freddie Burns, 9 Dan Robson, 8 Ben Morgan 7 Akapusi Qera, 6 Matt Cox, 5 Alex Brown (c), 4 Tom Savage, 3 Rupert Harden, 2 Darren Dawidiuk, 1 Nick Wood.
Replacements: 16 Dan Murphy, 17 Huia Edmonds, 18 Shaun Knight, 19 Will James, 20 Sione Kalamafoni, 21 Dave Lewis, 22 Henry Trinder, 23 Martyn Thomas
Northampton Saints:15 Ben Foden, 14 Ken Pisi, 13 George Pisi, 12 Dom Waldouck, 11 Vasily Artemyev, 10 Ryan Lamb, 9 Lee Dickson, 8 GJ Van Velze, 7 Tom Wood, 6 Phil Dowson, 5 Christian Day, 4 Samu Manoa, 3 Brian Mujati, 2 Dylan Hartley (c), 1 Soane Tonga'uiha.
Replacements:16 Mike Haywood, 17 Alex Waller, 18 Paul Doran Jones, 19 Mark Sorenson, 20 Rhys Oakley, 21 Martin Roberts, 22 Stephen Myler, 23 Luther Burrell.
Date: Saturday, September 1
Venue: Kingsholm, Gloucester
Kick-off: 15.00 BST (14.00 GMT)
Referee: Dave Pearson

I think the bookies are wrong on this.
The saints' forwards are beasts and Dylan Hartley is one of the few forwards playing northern Hemisphere rugby who can actually grub kick a ball, and has amazing awareness of what is around him.Saints by 5 pts.

Game over and once again Glouceswter nancy boys can't win at home.
Saints won by 5 as predicted 24-19

Aviva RD 1 Wasps vs Quinns

Aviva Premiership

Saturday , September 1
Wasps vs Harlequins 5/11
Gloucester 11/17 vs Northampton
Exeter 4/6 vs Sale
Worcester  vs Bath    4/7
Saracens 3/10 vs London Irish

Sunday , September 2
London Welsh vs Leicester 1/7

I have included just the bookies odds on the favourite for each game.
To work out what the approx odds for the other team is, simply invert the numbers.
Thus a favourite at 4/6 would ideally make the other team a 6/4 shot.

The bookies are usually pretty good with their assessment.
Our job is to find the odd result here and there.

Wasps vs Quinns
From Planet rugby
Nick Evans will make his 100th appearance for Harlequins when they open the defence of their Aviva Premiership title against Wasps in the London Double Header at Twickenham.
Harlequins fly-half Nick Evans will make his one hundredth appearance when his side opens the defence of their title against London Wasps.
The former All-Black joined Harlequins in 2008 and, since making his debut against Saracens, has accumulated over 1 000 points for the club.
Both Mike Brown and captain, Chris Robshaw start after recovering from injury while on international duty with England and take their familiar roles at full-back and flanker respectively.
Matt Hopper starts at outside centre, partnering Jordan Turner-Hall. Turner-Hall's regular centre partner, George Lowe lines up on the wing.
The forwards are unchanged from the eight that lined up in the Premiership final in May. Ben Botica, who joined the club in July, is named among the replacements.
Meanwhile, Italians Andrea Masi and Fabio Staibano will make their competitive debuts for Wasps.
Wasps' director of rugby Dai Young's starting XV also features a return for James Haskell after a three-year break since his last appearance in the black and gold shirt.
Led by captain Hugo Southwell, Young has named a side full of experience and a feature of the squad this weekend is a bench full of impact and talent with summer signings Ashley Johnson and Tom Palmer among the new faces.
Young said he was presented with a welcome selection headache this week.
"There were some pretty tough decisions to be made in a number of spots, but that is a great position to be in," he said.
"Harlequins present the toughest possible start for us and we will rightly go into the game as firm underdogs.
"It will take us some time to gel as a team but we're going into Saturday with a solid pre-season campaign under our belts and we're looking for a big performance."
Young added that the competition for places in the Wasps squad would only get more intense in the weeks ahead.
"There are a few guys still out who we hope to bring back into the mix next weekend.
"Stephen Jones has been struggling over the past couple of weeks with his back and Lee Thomas with a strain in his knee; but we are hoping they will be available for the second game.
"We haven't considered Chris Bell or James Bailey either for this game with both almost recovered from their injuries, but again that's another two to add to our options very soon."
Form: London Wasps have a won 4, drawn 1, lost 3 record in previous London Double Headers and are unbeaten in the last three, whilst defending Champions, Harlequins, have a very even W3, D1, L3 record in previous London Double Headers. Wasps concluded their last campaign with four straight Premiership defeats. Harlequins lost just one of their final eight matches in the competition: 33-43 against Leicester at the Twickenham Stoop on 21 April. Quins have won their last five meetings with Wasps in all competitions, and have lost on just one of their last five visits to Twickenham.

The teams:
London Wasps: 15 Hugo Southwell (c), 14 Christian Wade, 13 Elliot Daly, 12 Andrea Masi, 11 Tom Varndell, 10 Nick Robinson, 9 Joe Simpson, 8 Billy Vunipola, 7 Jonathan Poff, 6 James Haskell, 5 Joe Launchbury, 4 Marco Wentzel, 3 Fabio Staibano, 2 Tom Lindsay, 1 Tim Payne.
Replacements: 16 T Rhys Thomas, 17 Simon McIntyre, 18 Zak Taulafo, 19 Tom Palmer, 20 Ashley Johnson, 21 Nic Berry, 22 Tommy Bell, 23 Chris Mayor.
Harlequins: 15 Mike Brown, 14 Tom Williams, 13 Matt Hopper, 12 Jordan Turner-Hall, 11 George Lowe, 10 Nick Evans, 9 Danny Care, 8 Nick Easter, 7 Chris Robshaw (c), 6 Maurie Fa'asavalu, 5 George Robson, 4 Olly Kohn, 3 James Johnston, 2 Joe Gray, 1 Joe Marler.
Replacements: 16 Rob Buchanan, 17 Mark Lambert, 18 Will Collier, 19 Charlie Matthews, 20 Tom Guest, 21 Karl Dickson, 22 Ben Botica, 23 Ross Chisholm.
Date: Saturday, September 1
Venue: Twickenham
Kick-off: 14.00 BST (13.00 GMT)
Referee: Greg Garner

Harlequins have a settled coaching team in place and they have not made any major changes to the squad that landed the club their first Aviva Premiership title in May. This stability should help them get off to a quick start as they will have the cohesion and unity necessary to play at the highest level. Nick Evans will make his 100th appearance for the club on Saturday and the former All-Black will play a key role if they are to begin with victory here. Mike Brown and Chris Robshaw have recovered from injuries they picked up on international duty over the summer and start and Conor O'Shea has named the same eight that packed down in the Grand Final last May.
London Wasps have lost three and drawn one of the four matches played between these sides in the last two seasons and so face an uphill battle to get anything out of their opener. There was a yellow card in each of their games against Harlequins last season and with the heated atmosphere in front of a packed Twickenham a sin-binning could well be on the cards again today. Wasps were one of the most successful English club sides during the past decade but their recent slump has forced them to try and re-build their squad following the departure and retirement of their leaders in the dressing room. Former stars Tom Palmer and James Haskell will add much needed experience after the pair returned from stints in France and are both named in Dai Young's matchday 22.

I am not a fan of Wasps coach Dai Young. Everywhere he goes he brings crap rugby and losses.
Hes as bad as Andy Robinson of Scotland. While I'm on the subject of crap coaches lets add Scott Johnson.

Wasps have some excellent backs. That Andrea Masi has some pace and along with Christian wade should be scoring many tries.
But Quinns have the same settled side and will win by 10

game over.
Wow...thats a Wasps team. They nearly beat Quinns.
Score 42-40 Quinns.
Wasps will be one to watch from now on.

FC Grenoble v Stade Français Paris
Stade Lesdiguières, Grenoble
These teams have met four times in the last decade and Stade Français have won every time. In fact, going even further back, the Parisians have not lost in their last five visits to Grenoble.
But considering Stade Français's form away from the capital in recent years, Grenoble - under the guidance of former Stade stalwart Fabrice Landreau - will fancy their chances in their first top division home game in seven years.
Both clubs have a victory and a defeat under their belts this season but Stade Français have won just one of their last 20 games on the road!
Grenoble sharpshooter Valentin Courrent starts at scrum-half while Shaun Sowerby, who started his career in France with Stade, is at number eight.
Felipe Contepomi is at ten for the visitors in the absence of the injured Jules Plisson.

Previous result Stade Français won 28-8 in 2005.
Prediction: Grenoble have made a decent start and will be up for it at home. Grenoble by a whisker
Kick-off: 20.50 (18.50 GMT)
Referee: Jean-Luc Rebollal

Pete disagrees with Planet rugby pick. Stade have just too many superstars. Yes they have sucked away from home, but its time for these nancy boys to step up and earn their fat pay checks. It shouldn't matter where you play. Stade by 10. It should be much more.

Game now finished and Grenoble out hustled Stade . Owner should ask for half the Stade players' salaries back.

Biarritz Olympique 8/11v Stade Toulousain11/8
Parc des Sports d'Aguilera, Biarritz
The co-leaders face off in the Basque country where Biarritz seem to have rediscovered some form. It's been four years since BO started the season with back-to-back wins. Counting their Amlin Challenge Cup title of last season, the Basques are on a winning streak not seen for ages.
Toulouse have won the last eight games between these sides in all competitions and six of the last eight games in Biarritz. But the defending champions struggled in their opening games, needing late surges from their bench to win at home against Castres and Mont-de-Marsan.
Toulouse have been uncharacteristically indisciplined and will need to tighten up to maintain their unbeaten record.
Former Crusaders and Leinster fly-half Matt Berquist has recovered from a hamstring tear and will play for the Biarritz youth team this weekend in the hope of breaking into the senior side in the coming weeks.
Toulouse will wait until late on Friday to make a decision regarding Luke McAlister, who injured a calf muscle last week.
Results last season: Toulouse won 24-0 at home and 20-15 in Biarritz
Prediction: Toulouse seem to still be in 'pre-season mode'. Biarritz by three points
Kick-off: 15.00 (13.00 GMT)
Referee: Mathieu Raynal

Waiting for team sheet before making picks.

 Petes preview
The loss of Yachvili didn’t stop Biarritz picking up an away win at Agen last week. They have scored 60 points, 5 tries in their opening games and conceded just 29.
Toulouse have won 3 of the last 4 games scoring between 20-24 points each time.
Biarritz have won 19 and drawn 3 of the last 27 home games and those stats would surely be better were it not for their slump during the World Cup.
Toulouse lost 4/5 away games at the end of the season and I’m still going to back them.
Just look at the quality all over the park. I just don't understand how they struggle so much. I shall watch the game at length tomorrow as it will be a cracker.
Toulouse by 5, which allows for a draw to collect half a point at superbru.
 Game over.
Toulouse and their big fat pay checks suck. Biarritz play good rugby and won 22-17

Castres Olympique 2/11 v Aviron Bayonnais
Stade Pierre Antoine, Castres
Castres play their second consecutive game at home, where they have lost just once in two years.
It's been a frustrating start to the season for CO, who lost in Toulouse in the dying minutes and threw away a winning bonus point against Grenoble last week by conceding a late try while playing with 14 men.
Bayonne have impressed on defence so far having given up just two tries and three penalties in two games. Last week's home win over Stade Français, thanks to the accurate kicking of Jacques-Louis Potgeiter, would have reassured the Basques after the fly-half failed dismally against Clermont on the opening weekend.
However, Bayonne have yet to score a try and considering Castres' defensive record they might go a third week without a five pointer.
Benjamin Boyet makes his return to the extended Bayonne squad from injury this week while former Hurricanes fly-half Daniel Kirkpatrick could make his debut for Castres.
Results last season: Castres won 31-19 at home; 16-16 draw in Bayonne
Prediction: Castres have won their last three home games against Bayonne. Castres by nine points
Kick-off: 18.30 (16.30 GMT)
Referee: Laurent Cardona
Castres
Le XV de départ: Dulin ; Martial, Cabannes, Kirkpatrick, Andreu ; (o) Bernard, (m) Kockott ; Caballero, Tekori, Bornman ; Rolland, Capo Ortega ; Wihongi, Mach, Taumeopeau.
Remplaçants: Lazar, Rallier, Samson, Claassen, Teulet, Baï, Evans, Coetzee.
Bayonne
Le XV de départ: Heymans; Fuster, Lacroix, Lovobalavu, Rokocoko; Potgieter (o), Garcia (m); Marmouyet, Baget, Haare; Chisholm, Boutaty; Boyoud, Arganese, Iguiniz.
Remplaçants: Roumieu, Manukula, Linde, Puricelli, Phillips, Boyet, Mazars, Tialata.

Petes picks
Bayonne lost 12/13 away games last season, 6 of them being by 1-12 points. Another team that cannot play rugby on someone elses pitch...ridiculous.
Must go for castres and because they always do it via forwards it won't be by much.. In fact I like the Bayonne backs more.
Castres by 3
 Game over.
Never watched the game because its practically impossible to find a feed on internet.
but they obviously did well by beating Bayonne 31-10

ASM Clermont Auvergne 1/7 v USA Perpignan
Parc des Sports Marcel Michelin, Clermont Ferrand
The 2010 champions host the 2009 champions. But the comparisons end there as Perpignan have had a miserable time over the past two years and, so far, not much has gone right this season.
Win-less in two games and yet to cross the whitewash, the Catalans are already in trouble. Fortress Marcel Michelin, where Clermont have not lost since 2009, is not the place to expect to get their season back on track, especially since Clermont have the best defence in the league this term.
Title favourites Clermont play their first game at home having claimed victory in Bayonne and a losing bonus point in Montpellier last week.
The hosts have a sizeable injury list though with Julien Bardy, Lee Byrne and Julien Bonnaire all ruled out while Aurélien Rougerie and David Skrela are doubtful.
Results last season: Clermont won 29-23 at home and 39-3 in Perpignan
Prediction: USAP have lost 15 out of 17 games in Clermont since 1948. Clermont by ten points
Kick-off: 18.30 (16.30 GMT)
Referee: Christophe Berdos

Teams

 Petes picks
Clermont have won 27/27 home games and 20 of them by more than 7 points.  The last 2 home games against Perpignan have seen 6 point winning margin.
Perpignan lost 12/13 away games last season.
Clermont
Le XV de départ: Byrne; Sivivatu, Stanley, Fofana, Nalaga; (o) James, (m) Parra; Lapandry, Chouly, Bonnaire (cap); Hines, Jacquet; Zirakashvili, Paulo, Debaty.
Les remplaçants: Cabello, Domingo, Pierre, Vermeulen, Radosavljevic, King, Nakaitaci, Kotze.

Perpignan
Le XV de départ: Hume ; Sid, Mafi, Piukala, Battle ; (o) Bosch, (m) Cazenave ; Leo, Narraway, Perez ; Tchale Watchou, Charteris ; Mas, Guirado, Taumalolo.
Remplaçants: Schuster, Terrain, Castex, Vahaamahina, Guiry, Mélé, Haughton, Strokosch.

Two good sides stuffed with talent. If Clermont play an open game they have the backs to dominate.
Clermont by 8

Montpellier Hérault Rugby 1/7 v SU Agen
Stade Yves Du Manoir, Montpellier
Second last in the standings, Agen have had a terrible start to the season having lost both their opening games at home to Racing-Métro (20-24) and Biarritz (19-25).
The record books suggest that Philippe Sella's team are unlikely to get their first win this weekend since they have not tasted victory in Montpellier since 1997.
Montpellier got their first points of the season last week with a solid home win over Clermont, which would have come as a massive boost after a poor pre-season and a big defeat in Paris.
With tough fixtures on the horizon against Biarritz and Toulon, Montpol need to put a few points in the bank.
Argentina U20 prop Nahuel Lobo will undergo tests on Friday with a view of signing a short-term contract with Montpellier as a medical joker to cover for the absence of Na'ama Leleimalefaga, who broke his arm against Stade Français.
Results last season: Montpellier won 44-18 at home; Agen won 18-12 at home
Prediction: Agen have lost on their last six visits to Stade Yves Du Manoir. Montpellier by ten points
Kick-off: 18.30 (16.30 GMT)
Referee: Stéphane Pomarède
Montpellier have won 21 and drawn 1 of last 27 home games.  10 of those 21 wins have been by 1-12 points.
Montpellier to win by 3.
Sorry I couldn't find a team list which I could copy and paste.
Agen have some good players also, so i don't think this will be a walkover for Montpellier.
Although I am staggered by the statistic that 72% of all games in top 14 last year were won by the home side. Ridiculous.

Montpel won 32-15. Once again only caught glimpses of game.

Racing-Métro 92 2/17 v Union Bordeaux-Bègles
Stade Yves Du Manoir - Colombes (Paris)
Racing-Métro have had a mixed start to the season: Victory on the road to Agen, despite an unimpressive display, was followed by defeat at home to Toulon in a thrilling game that went down to the wire.
At home again this week, victory is a non-negotiable for Gonzalo Quesada's men if they are to maintain contact with the other title contenders.
Bordeaux-Bègles bounced back from a surprise loss to Grenoble to battle their way past Perpignan last week. Tenacious but uninspiring in the opening weeks, UBB are in for a long evening in the capital unless they can raise their game.
Racing-Métro captain Jacques Cronje has been ruled out with a neck injury. He joins Mikaele Tuugahala, Albert Vulivuli , Benjamin Fall and Johnny Leo'o in the nurse's office. Sireli Bobo, Andrea Lo Cicero, Sébastien Descons and Jone Qovu have returned to training but are not yet match fit.
Results last season: Racing won 22-13 at home; UBB won 22-18 at home
Prediction: If Racing can repeat last week's form, they should win easily. Racing by 15 points
Kick-off: 18.30 (16.30 GMT)
Referee: Cyril Lafon
Racing
Les avants : Battut, Ben Arous, Bianchin, Brugnaut, Dellape, Ducalcon, Gérondeau, Ghezal, Le Roux, Matadigo, Metz, Sa, Van der Merwe, Szarzewski.
Les arrières : Bélie, Bergamasco, Chavancy, Dambielle, Dumoulin, Estebanez, Germain, Jané, Machenaud, Vakatawa, Wisniewski.
Racing have won 21 and drawn 2 of 28 home games.  12 of the 21 wins saw a 1-12 winning margin.
Can't find a good team sheet for either team. Racing need to win at home and if they pick the right 20 from above should beat begles by 10

Racing looked like they were going to win solely through penalties.
Eventually won 18-7. My prediction of 10 is close enough.

Stade Montois v RC Toulon 1/5
Stade Guy Boniface, Mont-de-Marsan
Toulon have never won in Mont-de-Marsan, but they've never arrived with a team like this one! RCT hit the road for the third time in as many weeks but a bonus point win could taken them to the top of the standings.
After grinding past Perpignan on the opening weekend, Bernard Laporte's team showed they can play ball by running two excellent tries past Racing last week.
For Mont-de-Marsan, the tough start to the season is set to continue as they must face another heavyweight club after going down to Toulouse and Biarritz.
But don't expect it to be one-way traffic. Les Montois held the lead at the hour mark in Toulouse last week, an illustration of their ability to trouble the big guns. The last-quarter meltdown was, however, an example of their lack of depth as they couldn't match the rise in tempo provided by the Toulouse bench.
Toulon's travelling army has seen Frédéric Michalak included in the extended squad for the first time this season.
"The number 10 shirt is a difficult one to manage - very strategic," said Laporte.
"Fred has been with us for just three weeks and we do not want to ask too much of him too early. He has signed up with us for three years so we will give him the time to properly adapt."
Previous result: Toulon won 38-22 at home in 2009
Prediction: Mont-de-Marsan will have to wait a bit longer for their first positive result. Toulon by ten points
Kick-off: 20.40 (18.40 GMT)
Referee: Cédric Marchat
Toulon
Le XV de départ: D. Armitage ; Martin, Bastareaud, Mermoz, Lapeyre ; (o) Wilkinson, (m) Durand ; S. Armitage, Van Niekerk, Gunther ; Suta, Botha, Kubriashvili, Bruno, Sheridan.
Remplaçants: Ivaldi, Jenkins, Hayman, Shaw, Kennedy, Giteau, Michalak, Rooney.

TOO EASY for Toulon. A quality side with reserves that would make the Montois starting side every week.
Toulon by 21

Toulon were behind for most of this match and only won at the death..29-15

Rabo Dierct Pro 12 games Rd 1

RaboDirect PRO12
Friday , August 31
Newport-Gwent D'gons 1/4 vs Zebre
Benetton Treviso 11/8 vs Ospreys 8/11
Ulster 8/13 vs Glasgow
Saturday , September 1
Connacht 11/8 vs Cardiff Blues 8/13
Scarlets 3/4 vs Leinster 4/3
Edinburgh 10/11 vs Munster 11/10

My tips;
Dragons by 5. Zebre are an unknown entity but have some Italian Internationals, and I was never happy with the way Dragons played last year.

Benetton look solid and with a South African coach i think will win more games at home.
Ospreys missing a few internationals. Last time they met it was a draw in H Cup.
It will rain tonight so I'm backing the bookies and going for a 1pt Treviso win.

Ulster have been performing well in the off season so I think they will hit the ground running at home and will win by 5

A good start for me....Dragons won easily by 37-6
Treviso upset Ospreys 12-6 and Ulster bt Glasgow 18-10
I watched most of Treviso game and was appalled by the lack of skills by Osprey.

Saturday Games
Connacht vs Blues
This from Planet Rugby
Cardiff Blues are without several big names for their RaboDirect PRO12 opener against Connacht at the Sportsground in Galway on Saturday.
Coach Phil Davies is missing the likes of Sam Warburton, Jamie Roberts, Leigh Halfpenny, Michael Paterson, Chris Czekaj and Jason Tovey.
There is a starting competitive debut at his new region for hooker Andi Kyriacou, who lines up alongside Taufa'ao Filise and Thomas Davies.
"We are looking forward to the start of the season, after a pretty gruelling pre season in many ways, the players have worked very hard to be fair to them," said Davies, speaking ahead of the fixture.
"The fitness standards that are needed for regional rugby are high and the players have all worked to achieve that standard.
"A lot of work has been carried out over the summer to improve all our team system and hopefully that focus will be there Saturday and then there for the next 21 games after that.
"We have about nine players out injured now with Czekaj added to the list. Rhys Patchell is out injured with a bang on the shoulder from last week against Bath. He has done exceptionally well for a young man and Jason Tovey has been unwell all week. Michael Paterson is out with a shoulder injury and Scott Andrews is out with a knee injury but should be back next week. We are also missing Ryan Harford, Sam Hobbs and Cooper-Woodlley from the front row.
"The international players have a specific training programme so we are missing a number of them. We started training with one set of boys and that is the difference with the RaboDirect PRO12 to the English Premiership, the international players come back later than the initial squad.
"The first squad we had back on June 11 worked through a conditioning block a recover block and rugby block. The internationals and some of the Under 20s are doing the same.
"Following their conditioning block and recovery block they will be available on Monday until the Autumn internationals, so we have them for the next 8 games after this first game.
"As of Monday we have almost a full squad to pick from which is great, it's trying to get them all fit and fighting to play each week.
"At the moment is we have four fit props out of nine. We have Tom Davies who is a young player but he is also a Welsh lose head in the future, I have no doubt. Then we have Andi Kyriacou and Fau Filise with him who are experienced.
"I am confident we can go out and play well on Saturday and gain a result which is the most important thing."
Meanwhile, Gavin Duffy will lead his Connacht side out, having been announced as captain for a second year running. Duffy is supported on the wings by last season regulars Fetu'u Vainikolo and Tiernan O'Halloran while the centres are Mata Fifita and Eoin Griffin.
Kieran Marmion will gain his first cap for Connacht at nine. He started in the pre-season friendly against Harlequins and also played a pivotal role for Ireland at the Junior World Championship, starting four of their five games en route to a highest ever finish of fifth.
Another regular from last season is out half Miah Nikora who got a good run out in both pre-season friendlies in August.
"All the pre-season training has led to this point and we can't wait to get going," said director of rugby Eric Elwood.
Form: Both Connacht and Cardiff Blues have begun with an opening weekend victory for the past two seasons. Connacht achieved their highest tournament finishing position last season (8th), and won three of their last four games. Connacht have lost only one of their last six matches at the Sportsground: 16-20 to Munster on 24 March. Cardiff Blues had a disappointing end to the 2011/12 RaboDirect PRO12 season, winning just one of their last six encounters: 38-13 over Edinburgh at the City Stadium in round 21. The Blues' solo away victory since January came in Treviso on 3 March. Connacht have beaten the Blues only once since 2005: 18-16 at the Galway Sportsground on 18 September 2009.

The teams:
Connacht: 15 Gavin Duffy (capt), 14 Tiernan O'Halloran, 13 Eoin Griffin, 12 Mata Fifita, 11 Fetu'u Vainikolo, 10 Miah Nikora, 9 Kieran Marmion, 8 George Naoupu, 7 Johnny O'Connor, 6 John Muldoon, 5 Mike McCarthy, 4 Michael Swift, 3 Ronan Loughney, 2 Ethienne Reynecke, 1 Denis Buckley.
Replacements: 16 Adrian Flavin, 17 Rodney Ah You, 18 Finlay Bealham, 19 Dave Gannon, 20 Willie Faloon, 21 David Moore, 22 Matthew Jarvis, 23 Robbie Henshaw.
Cardiff Blues: 15 Dan Fish, 14 Harry Robinson, 13 Gavin Evans, 12 Gareth Davies, 11 Tom James, 10 Ceri Sweeney, 9 Lewis Jones, 8 Andries Pretorius (c), 7 Josh Navidi, 6 Rory Watts-Jones, 5 James Down, 4 Robin Copeland, 3 Taufa'ao Filise, 2 Andi Kyriacou, 1 Thomas Davies.
Replacements: 16 Rhys Williams, 17 Beniot Borrust, 18 Nathan Trevett, 19 Lou Reed, 20 Luke Hamilton, 21 Lloyd Williams, 22 Cory Allen, 23 Tom Williams, 24 Owen Williams.

I can't say I am so looking forward to this game.
I can't believe the bookies have the Blues as favourites since they are missing so many internationals.
Connacht to win by 10 because they have so much experience in the team

Game over and Bookies correct although match report says connacht pressuring all the time...they just couldn't break through.
Blues win away 13-9

Scarlets 3/4 vs Leinster 4/3
this from Planet rugby...my favourite initial source BTW

Shane Jennings will captain Leinster in their PRO12 clash against the Scarlets at Parc y Scarlets on Saturday.
Jennings is joined in the back-row by fellow flanker Dominic Ryan and number eight Leo Auva'a.Damian Browne locks down alongside Devin Toner.
Isaac Boss, who skippered the side in last weekend's 10-all draw away to Sale Sharks, partners Ian Madigan at half back.
Twenty-three-year-old fly-half Madigan, who was the province's young player of the year last season, will make his 50th appearance after featuring 26 times last season.
Noel Reid continues his centre partnership with Brendan Macken, with Andrew Conway named in a pacey back three alongside Fionn Carr and full-back Isa Nacewa.
Tom Denton could be set to make his competitive debut for the team if he appears from the bench which includes six products from the Leinster Academy.
Meanwhile, the Scarlets are showing their intent with a strong team and plenty of experience and power to call on from the replacements bench.
There will be plenty to excite the home supporters in the backs with Wales internationals Liam Williams, George North and Scott Williams on hand - backed by experienced league campaigners Andy Fenby, Gareth Maule and Aled Thomas - all of whom put in strong performances in their pre-season clash against London Welsh last weekend.
Aaron Shingler returns to the back-row alongside Josh Turnbull and new skipper Rob McCusker at number eight, with new South African signing George Earle and former Osprey Richard Kelly in the second row after the Scarlets produced a strong line-out performance last weekend.
With internationals Matthew Rees, Rhys Priestland and Jon Davies on the bench, the Scarlets have plenty of experience and flair to draw on for this encounter.
Form: Scarlets have begun in round one of the RaboDirect PRO12 with victory in three of the last four years. The Welshmen concluded the last campaign with just one defeat in their last seven matches: 23-26 at Edinburgh on 30 March. Leinster were the only side to beat Scarlets at home in the RaboDirect PRO12 last season. Since the tournament became a season long one in 2003/04 amazingly Leinster have won in round one just once: 23-8 at home to Edinburgh in 2007! The only side to defeat the Leinstermen in the PRO12 after the 2011 Rugby World Cup was Ospreys, who did it twice. Scarlets have not beaten Leinster in their last seven encounters in all competitions, since their 18-16 victory at Parc y Scarlets in the opening round of this competition in season 2009/10.

The teams:
Scarlets:15 Liam Williams, 14 George North, 13 Gareth Maule, 12 Scott Williams, 11 Andy Fenby, 10 Aled Thomas, 9 Tavis Knoyle, 8 Rob McCusker (c), 7 Josh Turnbull, 6 Aaron Shingler, 5 Richard Kelly, 4 George Earle, 3 Deacon Manu, 2 Ken Owens, 1 Rhodri Jones.
Replacements: 16 Matthew Rees, 17 Phil John, 18 Samson Lee, 19 Sione Timani, 20 Kieran Murphy, 21 Gareth Davies, 22 Rhys Priestland, 23 Jonathan Davies.
Leinster: 15 Isa Nacewa, 14 Andrew Conway, 13 Brendan Macken, 12 Noel Reid, 11 Fionn Carr, 10 Ian Madigan, 9 Isaac Boss, 8 Leo Auva'a, 7 Shane Jennings (c), 6 Dominic Ryan, 5 Devin Toner, 4 Damian Browne, 3 Jamie Hagan, 2 Richardt Strauss, 1 Heinke van der Merwe.
Replacements: 16 Aaron Dundon, 17 Jack McGrath, 18 Martin Moore, 19 Tom Denton, 20 Jordi Murphy, 21 John Cooney, 22 Collie O'Shea, 23 Darren Hudson.

Television match official: Nigel Whitehouse (Wales)

Petes pick.
You can never really confidently back against leinster, even if it is their 2nd side. Their coach is a genius.
But the Scarlets have the better set of players today. I particularly like George Nort. The reserve bench alone could ensure a victory if they are behind.
If Scarlets are going to be in at the finish they need to win all home games.
Scarlets by 9
Well scarlets were brilliant. ggorge North at full speed is great.
They won by 45-20
Edinburgh 10/11 vs Munster 11/10
Interesting odds with nothing between the 2 teams.
This from Planet rugby;
ff-season signings James Downey and Casey Laulala will start in the Munster midfield for their PRO12 opener at Edinburgh on Saturday.
The duo are joined by fellow new player Sean Dougall plus international Donncha O'Callaghan in the starting line-up running out at Murrayfield.
Besides the three newcomers the only uncapped player in the squad is forward Barry O'Mahony while Doug Howlett leads the side for the first time competitively in his new role as captain.
Downey and Laulala form the midfield pairing and after an impressive debut season in which he scored four tries Luke O'Dea is named on the left.
Up front there's a strong spine to the selection, Damien Varley propped by the South African pair Wian du Preez and BJ Botha. O'Callaghan is partnered by the hard working Billy Holland with Dougall joined in the back-row by youth and experience in the shape of Paddy Butler and the ever dependable James Coughlan at number eight.
And there will be no easing into the season for Penney's side as Michael Bradley welcomes back a number of his internationals who were involved in the the triumphant three Test Australasia tour.
Meanwhile, some nine players from the successful Scotland tour of Australasia return to competitive action for Edinburgh.
Starting the match in the backs are captain and fly-half Greig Laidlaw as well as centre Nick De Luca and top try-scoring winger Tim Visser. Ross Ford, and back-row trio Ross Rennie, David Denton and Stuart McInally re-enter the pack, while props Allan Jacobsen and Geoff Cross are primed to enter the fray from the bench.
Head coach Michael Bradley's first selection for the 2012/13 season will also see five competitive debuts made from the outset.
With Tom Brown ruled out with a hamstring strain, new arrival Greig Tonks gets his first start in his preferred position of full-back with fellow new face, Ben Atiga, forming a centre partnership with De Luca for the first time.
Welsh international scrum-half Richie Rees forges a dynamic half-back partnership with Laidlaw, while Lee Jones completes the backs on the wing.
New props John Yapp and Willem Nel flank Scotland captain Ford in a formidable front row, with the pack completed by the familiar pairing of Sean Cox and elite development graduate Grant Gilchrist, who reinstate a partnership that started 15 matches last season.

Form: Edinburgh's only round one victory since 2005 came at Cardiff Blues in 2009. The Scotsmen finished off last season's RaboDirect PRO12 season with victory at home to Benetton Treviso. Edinburgh have won their last three games at Murrayfield in all competitions, but have not beaten any Irish province since this equivalent fixture last season - played on 30 September 2011. Munster have begun their new campaign with a win in four of the past five seasons. The Munstermen's only victory away from home in their last four trips was 20-16 at Connacht on 24 March. Munster have lost just one of their last ten encounters with Scottish opponents. In the history of the tournament the two sides have met on 21 previous occasions, with Edinburgh victorious on just five occasions.
The teams:
Edinburgh: 15 Greig Tonks, 14 Lee Jones, 13 Nick De Luca, 12 Ben Atiga, 11 Tim Visser, 10 Greig Laidlaw (c), 9 Richie Rees, 8 Stuart McInally, 7 Ross Rennie, 6 David Denton, 5 Sean Cox, 4 Grant Gilchrist, 3 Willem Nel, 2 Ross Ford, 1 John Yapp.
Replacements: 16 Andy Titterrell, 17 Allan Jacobsen, 18 Geoff Cross, 19 Perry Parker, 20 Dimitri Basilaia, 21 Chris Leck, 22 Gregor Hunter, 23 John Houston.
Munster: 15 Denis Hurley, 14 Doug Howlett (capt), 13 Casey Laulala, 12 James Downey, 11 Luke O'Dea, 10 Ian Keatley, 9 Duncan Williams, 8 James Coughlan, 7 Sean Dougall, 6 Peter Butler, 5 Billy Holland, 4 Donncha O'Callaghan, 3 BJ Botha, 2 Damien Varley, 1 Wian du Preez.
Replacements: 16 Mike Sherry, 17 Marcus Horan, 18 Stephen Archer, 19 Dave Foley, 20 Barry O'Mahony, 21 Peter Stringer, 22 Scott Deasy, 23 Ivan Dineen.

This is the hardest match to judge.
New coach from ITM Cup Canterbury, Rob penney, will bring a new vision and hopefully restore Munster's fortunes.
He is without quite a few Internationals whereas Scots have no such problems.
Bookies barely have Edinburgh as favourites.
Munster will do well when a few more of their Internationals can help anchor the side.
Today i must go with Edinburgh. They have to lay down the gauntlet for the rest of the season and badly need this victory.
Edinburgh by 5, just in case Munster do manage to hold them to a draw, and I can get a half point for superbru.

Game over. Edinburgh were their usual boring self. Crap rugby, hoof and chase crap.
They lost to a 2nd side munster 23-18

ITM CUP rd 3 2012

Tomorrow morning 2.35am Friday Aug 31 here in Houston TX
Hawkes Bay vs Counties Man
As much as I admire Tana Umaga, coach of Counties and like quite a few of their players, I am going with Hawkes Bay by 10.
I think they have a very good pack and I particularly like Zac Guildford. He is always lookig for work
TEAMS:
Hawke's Bay: 1. Adrian Barone, 2. Hika Elliot, 3. Ben Tameifuna, 4. Ross Kennedy, 5. Johan Schoonbee, 6. Adam Bradey, 7. Karl Lowe, 8. Mike Coman (capt), 9. Chris Eaton, 10. Daniel Waenga, 11. Zac Guildford, 12. Andrew Horrell, 13. Tua Saseve, 14. Tino Nemani, 15. Nick McLennan.

Reserves: 16. Ash Dixon, 17. Brendon Edmonds, 18. Kieran Coll, 19. Tivaini Fomai, 20. Isaac Paewai, 21. Ihaia West, 22. Gillies Kaka.

Counties-Manukau:1. Simon Lemalu, 2. Mahonri Schwalger, 3. Matt Talaese, 4. Ronald Raaymakers, 5. Jimmy Tupou, 6. Adam Cathcart, 7. DJ Forbes (capt), 8. Fritz Lee, 9. August Pulu, 10. Baden Kerr, 11. Sherwin Stowers, 12. Bundee Aki, 13. Reynold Lee-Lo, 14. Frank Halai, 15. Tim Nanai-Williams.

Reserves: 16. Suliasi Taufalele, 17. Maka Tatafu, 18. Daniel Adongo, 19. Mark Selwyn, 20. David Bason, 21. Ray Laulala, 22. Tony Pulu.

Well Zac came off injured and Counties were ahead at half 30-20. The Magpies then proceeded to get a penalty and then a series of excellent controlled plays brought a good try.
bay looked good in forwards finally and they will be average during rest of tournament. They ended up winning 37-30. So, magpies by 10 was within the Superbru 5 point margin for the bonus point.

Canterbury vs North harbor
Am waiting to see teams

CANTERBURY v NORTH HARBOUR
Status: Crossover
When: Saturday September 1, 2.35pm
Where: AMI Stadium, Christchurch
Referee: Keith Brown (Southland)
THE MAKE-UP of Canterbury’s line-up will be dependent on how they pull up after last night’s victory against Auckland.
The defending champions do welcome back All Blacks prop Wyatt Crockett, who will look to get the better of Harbour skipper Ben Afeaki in the scrums.

Canterbury: 15 Tom Taylor, 14 Adam Whitelock, 13 Robbie Fruean, 12 Ryan Crotty, 11 Johnny McNicholl, 10 Tyler Bleyendaal, 9 Willi Heinz , 8 Nasi Manu, 7 Matt Todd, 6 George Whitelock, 5 Luke Katene, 4 Dom Bird, 3 Nepo Laulala, 2 Codie Taylor, 1 Wyatt Crockett .
Replacements: 16 Ben Funnell, 17 Paea Fa'anunu, 18 Joel Everson, 19 Luke Whitelock, 20 Andy Ellis, 21 Telusa Veainu, 22 Rhys Llewelyn.
North Harbour: 15 Luke Devcich, 14 David Raikuna, 13 Cory Aporo, 12 Francis Saili, 11 Nafi Tuitavake, 10 Michael Hobbs, 9 Bryn Hall, 8 Vili Fihaki, 7 Sam Hayes, 6 Irwin Finau, 5 Filo Paulo, 4 Chris Smith, 3 Ben Afeaki (c), 2 James Parsons (c), 1 Salesi Manu.
Replacements: 16 Manu Leiataua, 17 James Afoa, 18 Api Ratuniyarawa, 19 Malakai Ravulo, 20 Brenton Helleur, 21 James Semple, 22 Pita Ah Ki.

Great Canterbury team particularly now that Nasi Manu is back. He does so much work.
North Harbour have some quality players, but after watching canterbury get to every ruck in numbers vs auckland last time, I just can't see harbour having enough ball to present a challange.
Canterbury by 24

Game over and nasi did well and cantab slaughtered Harbour by 33-11

WAIKATO v NORTHLAND
Status: Crossover match
When: Saturday September 1, 5.35pm
Where: Waikato Stadium, Hamilton
Referee: Sheldon Eden-Whaitiri (Auckland)
WAIKATO WILL be buoyed by putting 40 points on North Harbour to kick off its campaign.
The Mooloos had some prime performers in that 42-22 win in Albany, though few better than halfback Tawera Kerr-Barlow. They will fancy that they can put the squeeze on the Northland pack, which needs to feed more ball to the likes of Rene Ranger out wide.
Waikato blooded several youngsters in the opener, though flanker Marty Holah is out with a fractured ankle.

Waikato: 15 Trent Renata, 14 Tim Mikkelson, 13 Save Tokula, 12 Jackson Willison, 11 Declan O'Donnell, 10 Sam Christie, 9 Tawera Kerr- Barlow, 8 Alex Bradley (c), 7 Zak Hohneck, 6 Matt Vant Leven, 5 Romana Graham, 4 Chris Middleton, 3 Ben May, 2 Marcel Cummings- Toone, 1 Toby Smith.
Replacements: 16 Kalem Chan Boon, 17 Ted Tauroa, 18 Sam Kilgour, 19 Jono Armstrong, 20 Brendon Leonard, 21 Piers Francis, 22 Glen Robertson.
Northland: 15 Fa'atoina Autagavaia, 14 Dan Caprice, 13 Rene Ranger, 12 Derek Carpenter, 11 Mateo Malupo, 10 Ash Moeke, 9 Samisoni Fisilau, 8 Hale T-Pole, 7 Dan Pryor, 6 Dan Faleafa, 5 Bryce Williams (c),4 Jack Whetton, 3 Scott Vessey, 2 David Hall, 1 Matt Wallis.
Replacements: 16 Tone Kopelani, 17 Justin Davies, 18 William Whetton, 19 Jack Ram, 20 Rhyan Caine, 21 Orene Ai'i, 22 Tau Fa'asisila

Excellent Waikato team. Should win by 24

Northland put the hurt on Waikato and won 29-27

TARANAKI v TASMAN
Status: Crossover/Ranfurly Shield
When: Saturday September 1, 7.35pm
Where: Yarrow Stadium, New Plymouth
Referee: Vinny Munro (Canterbury)
THE TASMAN Makos have never held the Ranfurly Shield, but one of their forerunners – Marlborough – held the famous Log o’ Wood briefly in 1973-74.
They will be throwing the kitchen sink at this one after lowering the defending ITM Cup champs 25-22 in the upset of round one action.
The good news for Taranaki is that All Blacks hooker Andrew Hore is being released for this match. The bad news is that fullback Andre Taylor is out for up to six weeks with a serious hand injury.

Taranaki: 15 Kurt Baker, 14 Waisake Naholo, 13 Willie Rickards, 12 Jayden Hayward, 11 Frazier Climo, 10 Beauden Barrett, 9 Jamison Gibson-Park, 8 Blade Thomson, 7 Chris Walker, 6 Jarrad Hoeata, 5 Jason Eaton (c), 4 James Broadhurst, 3 Michael Bent, 2 Laurence Corlett, 1 Chris King.
Replacements: 16 Andrew Hore, 17 Carl Carmichael, 18 Kane Barrett, 19 Scott Waldrom, 20 Brett Goodin, 21 James Marshall, 22 Jackson Ormond.
Tasman: 15 Robbie Malneek, 14 Peter Betham, 13 Bryce Heem, 12 Andrew Goodman (c), 11 James Lowe, 10 Hayden Cripps, 9 Jeremy Su'a, 8 Jordan Taufua, 7 Shane Christie, 6 Joe Wheeler, 5 Tevita Cavubati, 4 Filipo Levi, 3 Campbell Johnstone, 2 Quentin MacDonald, 1 Sam Prattley.
Replacements: 16 Francis Smith, 17 Tim Perry, 18 Vernon Fredricks, 19 Tevita Kolomatangi, 20 Steve Alfeld, 21 Kieron Fonotia, 22 George Millar.
Referee: Vinny Munro

I like both of these teams. Taranaki have a slightly better scrum/pack and Beauden Barrett will create danger.
Plus Naki at home defending ranfurly Shield will give further impetus.
Even though naki have lost Andre Taylor to injury, I expect them to win by 10

Naki did well and so did Beauden. they won by 9 (49-40)

AUCKLAND v MANAWATU
Status: Crossover
When: Sunday September 2, 2.35pm
Where: Eden Park, Auckland
Referee: Nick Briant (Bay of Plenty)
THERE IS a narrow margin for error in such a compacted competition.
Auckland, which had Piri Weepu debuting last night, is 1-1 after going down to Canterbury last night.
The Auks were impressive in patches against Hawke’s Bay last Thursday night in the 36-29 victory, but outplayed by the red and blacks. A fine day will aid their aim of expansive rugby.
The Turbos are seeking to bounce back from an 11-30 loss to Wellington.
Teams
 TEAMS:
Auckland: 1. Pauliasi Manu, 2. Tom McCartney, 3. Ofa Tu’ungafasi, 4. Sean Brookman, 5. Andrew van der Heijden, 6. Steve Luatua, 7. Nepia Fox-Matamua, 8. Peter Saili, 9. Alby Mathewson, 10. Gareth Anscombe, 11. George Moala, 12. Hadleigh Parkes (capt), 13. Malakai Fekitoa, 14. Ben Lam, 15.Charles Piutau.

Reserves: 16. Nathan Vella, 17. Angus Ta’avao, 18. Nathan Hughes, 19. Joe Edwards, 20. Auvasa Faleali’i, 21. Simon Hickey, 22. Lolagi Visinia.

Manawatu: 1. Eric Fry, 2. Rob Foreman, 3. David Te Moana, 4. Fraser Stone, 5. Michael Fitzgerald, 6. Nick Crosswell (capt), 7. Callum Gibbins, 8. Hamish Gosling, 9. Karl Bryson, 10. Junior Tomasi Cama, 11. George Tilsley, 12. Frank Bryant, 13. Asaeli Tikoirotuma, 14. Craig Clare, 15. Nehe Milner-Skudder.

Reserves: 16. Bryn Templeman, 17. Ma’afu Fia or Jared Brock, 18. Reece Robinson, 19. James Oliver or Antonio Kirikiri, 20. Papa Wharewera, 21. Jason Emery, 22. Lewis Marshall

Auckland probably tired particularly since they were steamrollered by canterbury last time out.
Quite frankly Auckland forwards were just not motivated. Cantab beat them to every ruck and with more numbers.
Well they have a chance to redeem themselves against a side that was easily beaten by wellington last time.
I think Auckland by at least 15. They will be a bit more banged up than turbos.
WELLINGTON  v SOUTHLAND
Status: Crossover match
When: Sunday September 2, 4.35pm
Where: Westpac Stadium, Wellington
Referee: Matt Muir (Canterbury)
WELLINGTON HAD the luxury of fielding both Julian Savea and Victor Vito on Tuesday night against Hawke’s Bay.
The Lions came through that match after a second half comeback and they will be confident of inflicting more pain on the Stags, who were toothless – barring Kade Poki – in the 30-9 hiding inflicted by the Steelers.
Jeremy Thrush’s lineout battle with Josh Bekhuis should be fascinating.
This is the second of three Sunday 4.35pm matches for Southland.

Teams'
 TEAMS:
Wellington: 1. Arden David-Perrot, 2. Motu Matu’u, 3. Jeffrey Toomaga-Allen, 4. Jeremy Thrush (capt), 5. Mark Reddish, 6. Lua Lokotui, 7. Ardie Savea, 8. Genesis Mamea, 9. Frae Wilson, 10. Tim Bateman, 11. Matt Proctor, 12. Shaun Treeby, 13. Charlie Ngatai, 14. Alipate Leiua, 15. Jason Woodward.

Reserves: 16. Dane Coles, 17. Solomon Sakalia, 18. Whetu Henry, 19. Serge Lilo, 20. Kayne Hammington, 21. Joe Latta, 22. Ope Peleseuma.

Southland: 1. Jamie Mackintosh (capt), 2. Talemaitoga Taupati, 3. Nick Barrett, 4. Josh Bekhuis, 5 Alex Ryan, 6. Brayden Mitchell, 7. Alex Taylor, 8. Hoani MacDonald, 9. Jimmy Cowan, 10. Robbie Robinson, 11. Tim Cornforth, 12. Cardiff Vaega, 13. Nathan Hohaia, 14. Kade Poki, 15. Marty McKenzie.

Reserves: 16. Jason Rutledge, 17. Tukiterangi Raimona, 18. Ben Nally, 19. Michael Fatialofa, 20. Nemia Kenatale, 21. Matt Saunders, 22. Mark Wells.

Wellington have the quality players and should account for Stags by 18.

NORTH HARBOUR v COUNTIES MAN.
Status: Championship
When: Tuesday September 4, 7.35pm
Where: North Harbour Stadium, Albany
Referee: Glen Jackson (Bay of Plenty)
BOTH TEAMS are coming off short turnarounds, so how they rotate their squads could be decisive.
Coaches Liam Barry (North Harbour) and Tana Umaga (Counties) had contrasting openings to the ITM Cup. In 2011 the Steelers edged this fixture, 40-32 in Pukekohe.
The scrums were positives for both sides from round one, and there is plenty of pace and talent in the respective backlines.
Teams'

NORTHLAND v MANAWATU
Status: Championship
When: Wednesday September 5, 7.35pm
Where: Toll Stadium, Whangarei
Referee: Garratt Williamson (Wellington)
IN PALMERSTON North last season, the Turbos won this clash 30-22.
In 2010 the Taniwha won 77-8 in Whangarei. But all bets are off here in what shapes as a very tight encounter.
The Turbos have just over three days to recover from the Auckland match, while Northland has just four to get over Waikato.
Expect the ball to get plenty of air.
